I have always been confused by “good” and “well”. Most of the time I will be using “good” in the place of “well” and vice versa but I am sure that I will not be making that mistake from here onwards. This blog has helped me to understand the basic difference between the two. In this context I would like to point out that I am having similar problems with will and shall. Can anybody tell me the difference between these two?

I am of the view that there should be at least two spaces between sentences. As pointed out by rgiaquinta we were taught to do so when we were learning typing. But soon typewriters became obsolete and as a result it became less fashionable to put two spaces after each sentence. Nowadays everyone works in computers and all are putting one space after each sentence. I think if you put two spaces it will be much easier for older people to properly read the sentence.

I would like thank rgiaquinta for the information. In fact I am a journalist who never attached any importance to this rule. I used to use Roman numerals for writing each and every number. After reading this blog I realize that I was taught to write down 1 to 10 and after that to use Roman numerals. From here onwards I have decided to stick to that rule. I am sure that my editor will be impressed by my style.

I have the feeling that we are simply wasting our time by discussing useless things like these. Nowadays English is taught in a simple manner throughout the world. Previously grammar was given utmost importance. Punctuations were the second important thing. But now it has changed. Now the basic idea is that when you are speaking English to someone, the person whom you are speaking to should be able to follow what you are saying. This means that there is no need to give unnecessary importance to grammar and punctuations.

Writing Discussions / Frequently Asked Questions / Re: Why is the period outside the quotation marks in Rule 5?

I think the purpose of period is to put an end to the sentence. So that means that it should come at the end of the sentence. In the case of quotation marks even if they end it does not mean that the sentence has come to an end. Therefore period is placed at the end of the sentence outside the quotation marks. I would like to point out that grammarians around the world do not attach so much importance to punctuation marks as they used to do earlier.
